I have combined my paired paintings, Las Coatlicues, Dolorosa y Inmaculada, with a new work, a contemporary papel picado portrait, for this show. The spirit of this exhibit is in every way that which first drew me to painting–a spirit of generosity, adventurousness, inclusion, and social activism–which reflects both the character of Oaxaca, the place that gave me all I needed to grow, and the Latino community in the Bay Area, that continues to inspire and sustain me. I am honored to be a part of this exhibit–it has been a joy being at MCCLA working on this, and I am proud of the result. I hope you will come to see it, along with a broad array of very moving pieces, from the personal to the political.
